Thomas Tuchel has warned that there are no guarantees Phil Foden will be included in England’s World Cup squad when the final list is submitted on May 30.

Tuchel utilised the international break to experiment with his tactical setup as he looks to narrow down his selection for the tournament in North America.

The Three Lions are set to face Croatia, Ghana and Panama in the group stages starting this June.

However, the performance of several key individuals has raised questions regarding the final makeup of the 26-man squad as the 1966 world champions drew 1-1 with Uruguay and lost 1-0 to Japan.

Foden twice played from the off during the break, but the Manchester City playmaker failed to make a significant impact in either fixture.

The 25-year-old was substituted before the hour mark against both Uruguay and Japan after struggling to dictate play from a central role.

Tuchel admitted that while the midfielder has been excellent in training, he is currently finding it difficult to replicate that form on the pitch.

“He tried everything,” said Tuchel via Mail Sport after his side’s loss to Japan. “I would say he was excellent in camp but, yeah, he struggles to show it on the pitch

“Obviously, he didn’t have a lot of minutes for City recently. Then he came to camp with the brightest smile and was so good in training and I thought he will just surprise us and will play with the same verve and excitement but, yeah, he struggles to have the full impact.”

Foden has now gone 22 matches without a goal for the national team, with his last strike dating back to October 2022.

Indeed, the decision to deploy him as a false nine in the absence of Harry Kane proved largely unsuccessful during Tuesday’s defeat at Wembley.

Tuchel must now decide whether to show faith in the creative midfielder or opt for more clinical alternatives for the summer showpiece.

As a result, the final weeks of the Premier League season will likely determine if Foden can secure his place on the plane.

England remain among the favourites to lift the trophy despite their recent struggles in front of goal during the warm-up matches.
