Tottenham news: Roberto De Zerbi names Micky van de Ven as one of five Spurs captains ahead of new season

Tottenham Hotspur boss Roberto De Zerbi has named Micky van de Ven as the club’s new captain ahead of the Premier League season.
De Zerbi has been forced to choose a new captain after the club’s previous skipper, Cristian Romero, recently completed a move to Atletico Madrid.
Romero’s former central defensive partner, Van de Ven, has now been named as the club’s new captain ahead of Saturday’s Premier League opener against Brentford.
Van de Ven already has experience of leading the side after donning the armband on several occasions last term, including in the final six games of Tottenham’s survival fight due to Romero’s injury absence.
Porro features in Spurs leadership group
In addition to Van de Ven’s appointment, De Zerbi has also named four more captains as part of Tottenham’s leadership group for the 2026-27 season.
“The new captain is Micky van de Ven, the second Pedro Porro, the third Ben Davies, the fourth is James Maddison and the fifth is Archie Gray,” De Zerbi told reporters on Friday.
“Why five captains? Just because I want many captains inside of the pitch and to be clear in their position, and every one of them they deserve to be captain or in the group of the captains.
“But the personality, the passion, is not if you are captain or you are not captains.”
Why will Van de Ven not captain Spurs against Brentford?
Unfortunately for Van de Ven, he will not be able to lead the side at the Gtech Community Stadium due to injury.
“Today he (Van de Ven) worked with us, with the group – he’s going very well,” De Zerbi said.
“He suffered a problem during the pre-season in Australia. I don’t know if [it was] the flight, but it’s not a big problem, but not right to work.”
Porro will also miss the game as he continues to build up his fitness after missing Spurs’ pre-season schedule.
Ben Davies and James Maddison are unlikely to start, which means Archie Gray could wear the armband for the club’s Premier League opener.
