Paris Saint-Germain have left Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye out of their squad for this weekend’s game against Rennes amid interest from Liverpool.

The Premier League season is officially underway, though the Merseysiders will have to wait until 4:30pm to play their first game against Newcastle United.

That clash at St James’ Park is sure to be fierce, and Andoni Iraola will need forwards like Alexander Isak and Rio Ngumoha to be at their best.

Ngumoha could be one of only two first-team wingers in the Reds squad after Sunday if Cody Gakpo completes a transfer to Tottenham Hotspur, so it makes sense that the club have been linked with reinforcements such as PSG duo Barcola and Mbaye.

In news that could indicate an impending double swoop, PSG boss Luis Enrique has left both of the wingers out of his squad ahead of the team’s match against Rennes on Sunday.

Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye assessed: How will they fit in at Anfield?

It would be surprising if Liverpool signed the PSG pair alongside Yankuba Minteh, and given the Reds have reportedly been interested in Barcola for some time, the Brighton star may be seen as an alternative to Mbaye.

Barcola has primarily played on the left in his career, and he would almost certainly be the Merseysiders’ starter on that flank, while Mbaye has enjoyed plenty of success on the right.

The latter is only 18 and should not be expected to play every week, so perhaps he will have to share that side of attack with Ngumoha.

Victor Munoz could be an option on the left whenever Barcola is injured or forced to deputise for Isak, though Ngumoha broke into Liverpool’s XI as a left-winger, and his versatility may make him unpredictable in the final third.

Will Liverpool have the best attack in the Premier League?

Liverpool’s attack would almost certainly be the best in the division with both Mbaye and Barcola considering they would be joining the likes of Isak and Wirtz, with the pair likely to improve significantly after difficult debut seasons at Anfield.

Ngumoha is widely considered to be one of England’s most promising attacking talents, and the signing of Munoz adds significant depth.

Manchester City may have Erling Haaland, Antoine Semenyo and Jeremy Doku, but their depth in attack would not be as strong as Liverpool’s, while Arsenal’s forward line scored just 71 times in the Premier League last season.

If the Reds also sign a complementary player in midfield, then their frontline could carry them towards major honours in 2026-27.
